We strive to ensure our guests are happy and get the most from their stay - here's what they're saying about Johnson Cottage

These are some of the lovely comments we have received about our cottage and the area. We thank our guests for taking the time to write of their experiences, either while in the cottage, or afterwards by email - all comments are very much appreciated. And no, we haven't made any of them up!

"Loved the cottage, especially the sound of the brook at night. Great woodburner and beautiful local walks, particularly along river and woods below Symonds Yat - park at Goodrich Castle and follow walk in Walk This Wye (p.67). Best equipped cottage we've ever rented and more comfortable. We hope to return another season. Thanks so much."

RONA & MIKE, BRIGHTON | DECEMBER '09

"Thank you for a lovely welcome with mulled wine and mince pies - they were delicious. The log burner's wonderful and kept us lovely and warm. We managed to have a white Christmas in an idyllic spot which is a perfect combination! The walks around here are beautiful and Nick and Tim even ventured out for two off-road bike rides! The selection of DVDs, music and books has left us all well entertained. Everyone we've met in the pub (which serves delicious food!) and in the village shop have been very friendly and welcoming. Thank you again."

LIZI, TOM, ALISON, TIM & NICK | DECEMBER '09

"Thank you very much for such a lovely stay. Very pretty, cosy cottage and we felt very spoilt with the extra touches! Absolutely love this area - Tintern, wonderful - walk to the Devil's Pulpit, beautiful but we cheated and drove towards Chepstow and parked at the Tidenham car park and walked across the fields - rather than along the river from here up the hill! Hay-on-Wye was an interesting place to visit and we loved the food and the company two doors away - traditional village pub - terrific! PS Village Shop (up the hill) - FANTASTIC!"

DENISE & RICHARD, WILTSHIRE | DECEMBER '09

"Thank you for a very welcoming stay. Everything has been organised to an exceptional standard. Will recommend and be back next year."

JANE & JAMES, EXETER | DECEMBER '09

"This is a great place for reminding ourselves that the simplest pleasures are often the greatest. To curl up on a comfy sofa, in front of a stacked woodburner with a good book, listening to a babbling brook - who could ask for more? Thank you." [Mel]

"Amazing to feel isolated from the world but to have accessibility to good places to visit. We'd highly recommend lunch at The Walnut Tree in Abergavenny." [Gary]

MEL & GARY, BRIGHTON | DECEMBER '09

"We've had a lovely weekend stay. Cottage is beautiful. Love the bath. Got thoroughly soaked on our walk on Sunday and arrived 'dripping water' at the local shop/café where we had wonderful bowls of soup to warm us. We thought this shop was a great asset - lovely bread amongst other things. Many thanks."

ELAINE, RUTH, CHRIS & MARY | NOVEMBER '09

"Where do we start? Every detail has been thought of to make our stay absolutely perfect! We had many walks planned, sadly the weather had other ideas, but no matter at Johnson Cottage with so many books, DVDs and games to be explored! Fully recommend a pint at the pub next door, and the local shop is better stocked than most supermarkets! To say the locals are friendly is an understatement. Will recommend to everyone we know!"

AMY & IAN, LONDON | NOVEMBER '09

"We had a fantastic four days so thank you so much. Everything here is perfect and you sure know how to make people feel looked after. We love Johnson Cottage and hope to come back again one day. All the little extras you provide are really big comforts - so thanks once again. PS, The Brockweir Inn serves the best homemade steak pie!"

TINA & DAVE, LONDON | NOVEMBER '09

"The cottage is absolutely lovely and we have had a wonderful stay. We will be recommending the place to friends and family. Thank you for all the extra touches that made the stay better than we could have planned."

LYNDSEY & ADAM, LEEDS | NOVEMBER '09

"We really enjoyed our stay in the cottage. It was great to be able to walk from the front door. The cottage is very cosy and we enjoyed sitting in front of the log burner, as did our two dogs who were exhausted. Thank you for the cut flowers and wine. Much appreciated after a days walking."

CLIVE, NICKY, COCO & MERLIN, HERTFORDSHIRE | NOVEMBER '09

"Thank you so much for a wonderful stay in your gorgeous cottage. Everything has been thought of and the provisions and fresh flowers a lovely special touch. A week here has certainly not been long enough! Having never been to the Wye Valley we didn't have enough time to fit everything in! Cycling in the Forest of Dean, canoeing from Symonds's Yat and walking; wanted to spend more time in the cottage to take advantage of the fantastic collection of books, DVDs and CDs. Managed to read a little on Kubrick whilst listening to Björk! With a four year old to entertain there wasn't enough time for much reading! Thanks for the great collection of books, DVDs and games for children too! Blythe loved the Junior Monopoly. Thank you once again, everything was just perfect and will have to return to relax in front of the stove and work through your book collection!"

JADE, IAN & BLYTHE, CHESHIRE | OCTOBER '09

"Thank you so much for providing such a delightful place to stay in the middle of one of the most beautiful valleys in the country - we really enjoyed our five days. Very best wishes." [Feedback left in cottage]

"Thank you so much for the wonderful mushrooms and goodies.  We visited the Village Shop every day! Had lunch or tea and stocked up on their local veggies.  What a remarkable enterprise; we were most impressed. And the cottage was perfect - I do hope we left it as you expected to find it.   The walks were wonderful with all the autumn colours beginning to show.  The week turned out to be one of the best this year.   Many thanks for all the extra touches that made it so special." "Thank you for letting us stay here - we've had a wonderful break. Completely impossible to say anything original. It's all been said already! Suffice it to say that this place is totally sublime - for all the reasons that others have already mentioned. We managed to complete walks 3, 12 and 16 [in Lower Wye Rambles book] - the instructions for the last of these being more than a little confusing at one point! Would love to be staying longer, but will certainly be back. P.S. The freshly cut ham at the Village Shop is fantastic - we're taking a ton or two home! P.P.S. The walks were such an adventure for our Border Terrier Munch - thankyou from him!"

ROSS & BERNIE, BERKSHIRE/ESSEX | OCTOBER '09

"The cottage has been fantastic, thank you for all the homely touches!"

CATHERINE, NIGEL & AMELIE | JULY '09

"The cottage is ideal for a relaxing romantic break. However, we decided to use it as a base for a military style boot camp.
Day 1: The Three Castles Walk - none of this 'we quite enjoyed walks 8 & 10 around Brockweir' - this was nineteen miles of aimless trudging after yellow arrows between three desolate , non-descript ruins. Ended up getting a taxi between castle three and the start as it was getting somewhat dark and still raining.
Day 2: Go Ape! - swinging from trees at great height in the Forest of Dean - surprisingly enjoyable and no fatal injuries. Afternoon - hiring of a tandem which, after initial comedy value, we were surprisingly coordinated at.
Day 3: Canoeing the Wye. 'So have you done this sort of thing before?', the lady asked. 'Oh, yes', we lied. One rapid one route, one capsized canoe. River very warm though and some very pleasant swimming was had.
Day 4: And relax and enjoy the eclectic mix of Britney Spears while reading Hunter S. Thompson. I'm not sure that is what he would have wanted.
Day 5: Cricket comes to Wales and so we venture to Cardiff to exchange abuse with our Australian cousins. All very enjoyable apart from England being so poor.
Day 6: Some gentle rambling around Tintern and a lovely meal in Symonds Yat (which I still want to call 'Yak').
So, the cottage...very nice. TV useful for Ugly Betty, cooker useful for breakfast, CD player useful when we couldn't be bothered to chat, bed useful for all manner of things. Many thanks for a great stay." [Giles]

"Sorry, I'd like to apologise for Giles' inane ramblings - he does like a drink...thank you for a lovely stay in this beautiful corner of England/Wales." [Katie]

GILES & KATIE, LONDON | JULY '09

"Thank you for a wonderful week in your beautiful cottage. We have had a lot of nice walks and a lot of peace and quiet. Sleeping like logs, listening to the pouring creek. Thank you."

MARIA, GOSTA & ISAK, SWEDEN | JUNE '09

"We have spent an amazing week here - the cottage is fab, and all the little touches like the bathrobes, local provisions and flowers make it very special and homely. It's been the perfect spot to explore the area - we have made the most of the weather, walking, cycling and canoeing. So much to see! We had 2 great meals out at the Hardwick, Abergavenny and the fantastic Crown at Whitebrook (a special treat!) Thanks for letting us stay - we will be back and will certainly recommend it to friends."

HANNAH & ASH, WIMBLEDON | JUNE '09

"We had a lovely week at your cottage. The countryside is beautiful around here and we did many fab walks from the cottage and from neighbouring villages. All your extra touches in the cottage made our stay even more special so thank you very much. Thanks for a very relaxing week - and even the weather was wonderful."

"Many thanks for making our mini break so special with your lovely cosy cottage and all the little finishing touches. The wine was most welcome, as was the food and essentials. We loved the cottage, found it had everything we could possibly need, and some lovely extras - tons of films and books, and even fresh flowers. We immediately felt very at home. We found the local information and walks very useful, and we tackled three of them without getting lost. We ate at the Brockweir Inn a few times and were made to feel very welcome. We treated ourselves to a meal at the Crown. Very expensive but what a treat!! Hope to be back again one day. Thanks for everything."

VICKI & IAN, HERTFORDSHIRE | MAY '09

"Thank you for a nice break in your beautiful cottage! A very warm welcome with a bottle of wine, a ready fireplace and fresh flowers as well as some food - thanks. Brockweir and surroundings is a lovely place to stay with a nice pub as neighbours. The whole family enjoyed our stay here and we hope to visit this place sometime again."

MARC, NETTY & KIDS, HOLLAND | MAY '09

CAROL, COLIN & BEAU (THE DOG), WEST MIDLANDS | APRIL '09

"The cottage is very cozy and welcoming! Great selection of DVDs, books and music. We had a lot of R&R and loved cooking in the kitchen (bigger than ours in London)! The second bedroom was very convenient with our little one. Many thanks for the provisions you left - very thoughtful! All in all a lovely, relaxing stay. Many thanks."

VANESSA, DUDLEY & MADISON, LONDON | APRIL '09

"A beautiful cottage for a few days away in the picturesque Wye Valley - just what we were looking for. Your instructions for the burner were spot on - soon had whole cottage very warm. We too found the flowers, wine and food wonderful surprises which added much to our holiday - especially the delicious cooked breakfast, super sausages. Your books and music were very much appreciated. We enjoyed walk no. 12 from the Lower Wye Rambles book, with our own detour to take in the view of Tintern from the Devil's Pulpit which our boys enjoyed climbing. Canoeing at Symonds Yat and cycling in the Forest of Dean were also popular with the teenagers. We had a really delicious meal in the Butcher's Arms in Clearwell which we'd recommend, and the local shop has a wide and interesting selection of all sorts of foods - great for holiday treats, and it has a really friendly atmosphere. Thanks for a great break."

MARION, GRAHAM & BOYS, SURREY | APRIL '09

"We've had a wonderfully relaxing time in your beautiful cottage. You supplied everything we needed and the flowers, wine, robes and slippers were a lovely touch. Thankyou. We've eaten at the Brockweir Inn (next door) - Lynne & Richard are lovely and very welcoming. Great food too! The Wye Valley Hotel serves good food too. HAPPA was great for tea and cakes! So with all that food we needed to walk... Did several rambles from the Lower Wye Rambles book (10 & 12), plus a hike to Devil's Pulpit - worth the walk, views are fab. The Sculpture Trail in the Forest of Dean is worth a look too. We've had a lovely week with beautiful weather. Hope to return soon. Thanks so much." [Feedback left in cottage]

"We have just spent a wonderful week in Johnson Cottage and have returned refreshed and ready to go again!  You have yourselves a little gem in a beautiful location and in a lovely part of the world.  This was the first holiday we have taken with our dog and the walking was brilliant.  We really can’t wait to come back again.  Thanks so much for sharing your cottage with us... Thanks again for a great week.  Your attention to detail made the week all the more relaxing and enjoyable." [Subsequent email]

NIGEL, KAREN, DANIEL & PIPPA (THE DOG!), MANCHESTER | APRIL '09

" I just wanted to drop you an email to say, that we had a wonderful relaxing weekend, after a number of very long weeks. The cottage was delightful, and wanting for nothing. We felt we must comment on the bed, which was the most comfortable we have slept in, for a long time, and we struggled to get out of it, most mornings. We spent the weekend doing virtually nothing, but did manage to sample the beautiful countryside, spectacular views, and looked at some stunning properties, which made us think that we should invest in a holiday cottage. We had a very nice evening at The Crown at Whitebrook. However we felt we should let you know of our experience in the Ostrich Inn. The service was appalling (despite there being 3 waitresses), and we waited a very long time for food which, when it arrived, was overcooked. We felt the food was very overpriced for what it was. This obviously might have been a blip, but wanted to alert you. The landlord at the pub in the village was very welcoming, and entertaining. On our travels we had lunch at The Lough Pool Inn at Sellack, which was very nice - the fish and chips are highly recommended. We left, having half re-charged our batteries, and will certainly be sharing your website information with others who want a relaxing weekend away. We hope to return again."

CARRIE & ADAM | MARCH '09

"Wow, what a treat this cottage is. We wanted a few days of rest, relaxation and romance and couldn't have dreamed up a better place for it! The attention to detail makes this place really special, along with your eclectic and great taste in books, movies and music. We were lucky to be here on the mildest/sunniest weekend of the year so far and had a wonderful time rambling around (we did 10 and 13 in Lower Wye Rambles book - recommended) in the day and getting cosy by the fire at night. Thanks for creating such a haven in the Wye Valley which we have fallen in love with. We will definately be back and recommending this place to all our friends. Many thanks."

MICHELLE & JAMIE | MARCH '09

"Thank you for a wonderful stay in a beautiful cottage, comfy, spacious - brilliant. Will certainly recommend to our friends."

VERONICA & SUE, DERBYSHIRE | MARCH '09

"We were very pleased when we walked in the cottage. It really is beautiful. It was so thoughtful to leave the provisions. The towels, dressing gowns, slippers makes it feel very homely. We have visited the pub in the village on 4 occasions. Lynne and Richard are very welcoming and the food and drinks are very good. They are also very good value. We have been on various walks. We really enjoyed the walk to Devil's Pulpit viewpoint. It is a strenuous walk but the view from up there is worth it. We also enjoyed visiting Tintern and found the vineyard very nice, the lady was happy for us to sample all the wine and cheese she had. We would definately like to visit again. The break has been so relaxing, the scenery fantastic and the cottage is perfect! Many thanks."

EMMA & CLIFF, HERTFORDSHIRE | FEBRUARY '09

"Fantastic cottage in a fantastic location! We've had a great time, and don't want to leave. The walking books have been really useful, and it's great that you can do walks straight from the cottage! Great facilities within the cottage, especially all the DVDs, books, CDs and games. It's been a really relaxing weekend and we will definately be back to sit in front of the log fire again! Many thanks for a brilliant weekend."
